May 2023

Boy oh boy was this a busy May. There will be a couple more posts on a cub scout camping trip and an outing to SeaWorld, but here are the rest of the things we did this May!

A quick pic with my favorite girl!

A sweet lady (Shirley) in our ward loves to put on children's plays with the kids in the nearby wards. I ended up being the assistant director of The Little Red Hen (without knowing I had that role until I saw the program). I helped write parts, taught the kids the songs, and created a lot of the set. Shirley did the lion's share but it was fun to join in and I think it turned out super cute in the end. Elijah was a pig, Eden was a chick (but sadly she got sick hours before the play so she slept in a side room and missed out). Joseph was a narrator (and he wanted to dress up too so we made him a tardigrade costume). Sam created this video to share with the parents:

The set I created with the help of Shirley and one of the other parents.

Elijah the pig.

He was the only one who chose to be a pig.
Luckily someone brought a friend the last week and she got to be a pig too.

Joseph the tardigrade.

Our front yard was pretty much all dandelions for spring so Noah was in heaven blowing all the dandelions.

School was super busy in May as well. It was Eden's last month in school so they got to do a lot of fun things. Elijah participated in a school "store" the older grades put on and Joseph created his own shop. I think they all had fun, but yep. It was busy!

Eden in her element. She is becoming quite the artist.

Elijah uses his "money" to buy goodies.

Joseph created the "Joseph's Super Magic Exotic Pet Store".

I have never seen Joseph so excited about a school project. He did it completely by himself (a first as I'm always trying to make sure he finishes). Some of the animals for sale were Fire Tail Dragons, Mega Hognose snakes, Magic Sunfish, Flying Gecko, and a fan favorite: the bedlotl (a giant axolotl you can sleep on.)

On Eden's last week she had a crazy hair day (she put lots of bows in her hair), and Disney day (a combo of Minnie Mouse, Sisu, and Lion King).

For this photo, I'm handing this over to Sam as this was a special occasion.

"Hi everyone! Sam here. This is a photo of my two junior fellows (Jiwei Sheng and Albert Liao), Dr. Allan Kreiger, and myself. We had just finished the second "Kreiger Lecture" at UCLA, where we all presented cases and discussed different techniques in vitreoretinal surgery. Retina specialists who trained with Dr. Kreiger from all around the world flew in (on 2 weeks' notice, nonetheless) to join in the celebration of Dr. Kreiger's life and accomplishments. With over 60 years in the specialty, Dr. Kreiger is one of the giants that pioneered our medical field. His teaching on scleral buckles and retinal pathology has been instrumental in my education during my fellowship. It has been an amazing pleasure to learn from him and have an opportunity to train here in Los Angeles. I was probably the last fellow ever to train with Dr. Kreiger, as he stopped seeing patients at the beginning of this year."

Current fellows (minus Nick Iafe) with Dr. Kreiger

This year Sam tried to do a good deed. There is a lady in our ward who has gone through a lot health-wise and because of that is super mindful (i.e. neurotic) about everything, from things to eat to even her own furniture. For the past few years, she was sleeping on an air mattress, then sleeping on the floor when that leaked air, to sleeping on the couch. This was due to how picky she was about a mattress and not being able to afford one that fits her criteria. Sam was nice and offered to pay for a new mattress that she was willing to use. She was insanely grateful but started to worry about picking one as she had no idea what mattress fit her criteria. Her criteria included that everything must be organic, cannot come from a box, and it had to be brand new. Her worries had to do with fumes as they mess with her health. It was impossible to find one that didn't come in a box, so we did what we could. It took a while before she felt comfortable enough to sleep on it (she was still worried about any possible fumes). Next was getting the mattress off the floor. Again, she didn't want anything used so Sam whipped this frame out.

Sadly she didn't like the frame as we put linseed oil on it to protect it and she didn't like the smell. So we might be taking the frame for ourselves (not that we needed to take more things with us when we move).

Maybe I'll have Sam build some of these shelving units when we get back to Texas. Eli sure made use of them.

I think we mentioned how Eli learned how to ride his bike recently. He and Sam took a trail and he did great! They also passed by THE Beach Body studio where they filmed all the work outs.

Oh yeah, Mother's Day is also in May. The kiddos picked out cards and gifts for me. They included candy and games I could play with them. They also ate said candy....

And Sam's gift to me.

Elijah's last den meeting in cub scouts. He doesn't plan on continuing in Texas, but it was fun nonetheless.

Honestly I don't know what game this was, but look at these cuties!

Game of musical chairs.

The very last thing we did for cub scouts was go on a spring campout, but that will be a separate post. Sam was going to go with Eli but came down with some sickness so I came at the last minute. Sam instead hung out with the others and took them to a carnival the youth of the stake put on as a fundraiser. They did a really good job with it! Since I wasn't there I don't know much of the details, but the kids had a total blast. Here are some of the pictures Sam took.

Noah won the Paw Patrol movie.

Eden got unicorn headphones and an elephant.

Joseph got pineapple molds and a Harry Potter board game.

I was invited to a garden party. I've attended a couple but they are always so well-decorated and a lot of fun. The person who hosted happened to be really close that I could walk. Anywho, here are the shots I got.

I've been taking the opportunity to take a lot of photos of Elijah in Kung Fu as we are moving soon. Enjoy!

Lastly, at the end of the month, Eden graduated from preschool! It was a super cute event, and one of the best parts was that Sam could make it!

Eden was part of a little presentation of Pete the Cat's I Love My White Shoes.

Her friend Olivia was Pete the Cat.

Eden walking down in her gown.

Singing some songs for the parents!

Eden introduced herself and said she wanted to be a ballerina when she grows up.
We'll see how long that sticks!

Eden getting her certificate.

Whole class at graduation.

Eden with all her teachers she had during the year.

We're so proud of our girl! She's starting Kindergarten in August, that's so crazy!

A yummy lunch afterward.

Moved to eating outside.

Look at this cute cake!

Eden hanging with some of her friends. I had to snap this moment it looked so cute.

We really enjoyed sending her to Palms Park and although it seemed pricy for a preschool, it was the best deal out there in LA. Luckily in Texas preschool is free for military members so that was the only time we paid for preschool. The school also took some photos that they gave us at the end:

We love you Eden!!

Are you still here? What a long post! Just shows how busy this month was, and I still have two more!
